HISTORY OF THE ORDER

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky was established by the last of the “land” military orders during the days of the liberation of Ukraine at the proposal of a member of the Military Council of the 1st Ukrainian Front, Army General N.S. Khrushchev. This is the only military order, one of the degrees of which could be awarded to ordinary soldiers and partisans. It is also the only order of the USSR that had inscriptions not in Russian.

Although the statute of the order did not stipulate the condition of preferentially awarding the order to soldiers of any front, nevertheless, the majority of those awarded were part of the Ukrainian fronts. Perhaps this is partly explained by the huge number of partisan units operating in Ukraine (partisans were widely awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky), as well as the fact that Khmelnitsky is a national hero of Ukraine.

One of the initiators of the creation of the order was the famous Ukrainian film director A.P. Dovzhenko and poet M.P. Bajan. The project of the order was created on a competitive basis. The work of graphic artist A.S. was recognized as the best. Pashchenko, who was deputy head of the Department of Arts under the Council of People's Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR and chairman of the Union of Artists of the Ukrainian SSR. The commission approved his design drawing subject to modifications, which were carried out with the participation of the artist N.I. Moskaleva. The embossing and engraving work was carried out by engraver V.S. Sokolov.

It was established last - in 1943, during the days of the liberation of the territory of Ukraine by Soviet troops. This order could be awarded not only to commanders of army and navy units operating at the front, but also to private and non-commissioned personnel of army units. In addition, this award could be awarded to commanders and members of partisan formations and detachments that operated in enemy-occupied territory during the war. Moreover, one of the main features of the award was its design. This was the only Soviet order, the inscription on which was made in Ukrainian, and not in Russian. It was also the only military order, one of the degrees of which could be awarded to the rank and file.

The idea of establishing a new award belonged to the famous film director A.P. Dovzhenko, who in 1943, as a war correspondent, worked on a new documentary film “The Battle for Our Soviet Ukraine.” At the same time, there is another version of the appearance of this order. According to it, the idea belonged to Lieutenant General N.S. Khrushchev, who at that time was a member of the military council of the 1st Ukrainian Front. In any case, this idea was supported by the Soviet command. 13 artists took part in creating the sketch for the future award. The winners were graphic artist A. S. Pashchenko and artist N. I. Moskalev. The option they proposed was a five-pointed silver star, which was superimposed on a gold one. In the center there was a circle with the image of Bohdan Khmelnitsky. The decree establishing a new military order was signed by the USSR Armed Forces on October 10, 1943.

Externally, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, 1st degree, was an image of a five-pointed convex star. The surface of this star was made in the form of rays diverging to the sides. In the very middle of the order there was a circle of gold, which was bordered along the edge with a figured silver rim. In the center of this circle there was a chest-to-chest relief image of Hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytsky, in his right hand there was a mace. At the top of the circle along the edge there was the inscription “BOGDAN KHMELNYTSKY”, written in Ukrainian. In the spaces between the ends of the golden star there were five bunches of silver rays, these rays coming out from under the figured rim. The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, 1st degree, was made of gold with silver rays, as well as a silver rim around the circle. The gold content in the order was 19.332 g, silver - 26.676 g, the total weight of the award was 42.0 ± 1.8 g.

Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 1st degree

The gold content in the order was 6.507 g, silver - 35.385 ± 1.256 g, the total weight of the award was 43.9 ± 1.6 g. The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree, was made entirely of silver, the convex five-pointed star on this order had polished edges. This award was smaller. The dimensions of this order between the end of the beam of rays and the opposite end of the star were 45 mm; for orders of the 1st and 2nd degrees, this distance was 56 mm. The silver content in the III degree order was 29.554±1.369 g, the total weight of the award was 32.0±1.5 g.

On the reverse side of the award there was a nut and a threaded pin for attaching the orders to military uniforms and other clothing. The order was accompanied by a silk light blue moire ribbon 24 mm wide. White longitudinal stripes were applied to the tape. For grade I - one stripe in the middle (width 5 mm); for degree II - two stripes along the edges (each width is 3 mm); for degree III - three stripes, one in the middle and two at the edges of the strip (each width is 2 mm).

The Order was initially established in three degrees, the senior of which was the first degree. The statute of the order involves awarding it to personnel of the Red Army and Navy (an important addition, all other orders were awarded to “land” military leaders), as well as partisans and leaders of partisan detachments who, in battles with the Nazis, showed dedication, courage, determination, high patriotism, as well as demonstrated high combat training in conducting operations to destroy the enemy.

Peculiarities

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky is the last of the Soviet “land” military orders established during the Great Patriotic War. This is the only Soviet military order, the third degree of which could be awarded to ordinary soldiers, as well as partisans.

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky is the only order of the USSR, the inscription on which is not in Russian (Ukr. Bogdan Khmelnitsky).

Established during the liberation of Ukraine at the proposal of a member of the Military Council of the 1st Ukrainian Front, Lieutenant General N. S. Khrushchev; Among the participants in its creation were figures of Ukrainian culture: film director A. P. Dovzhenko and poet Mykola Bazhan.

13 artists took part in the competition for the best sketch of the order. The sketch of the artist N.I. Moskalev and the graphic artist A.S. was approved. Pashchenko. The very name of the order and the Ukrainian language of the inscription indicated that it was primarily confined to the Ukrainian SSR, although this was not officially stated anywhere in the statute. In fact, it was awarded mainly to those who distinguished themselves on the four Ukrainian fronts. It was widely awarded to partisans (by decree of January 4, 1944, many leaders of partisan associations in Ukraine were awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky of the first two degrees).

Awards

The first award of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III degree, took place on October 28, 1943. According to it, the deputy battalion commander, Senior Lieutenant T.D. Rybin, was awarded the order.

The first Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on awarding the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree, was issued on January 14, 1944. It notes the successful military operations of a group of Ukrainian partisans during the liberation of the city of Ovruch. As a result of the battle with the fascist garrison of eight thousand, the city was liberated, and a red flag hoisted on the highest building. It was installed by partisan Ivan Kalashnikov, one of the first holders of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree. The list of ten partisans - holders of orders of the third degree was opened with the name of the partisan intelligence officer E.A. Bodylevskaya, who particularly distinguished herself in the battles for the capture of the city of Ovruch in January 1944 (Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 4, 1944 “On awarding commanders and commissars of associations partisan detachments of the Ukrainian SSR with the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky").

Among the holders of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree, is Marine Sergeant Major Dubinda P.Kh. - the first Soviet soldier to be awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and at the same time all three degrees of the Order of Glory.

In the fall of 1943, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky was awarded to attack pilot Lieutenant G.T. Beregovoy. (later twice GSS and USSR pilot-cosmonaut).

Let me give you a typical example of an award. The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky III degree No. 714 was awarded to the troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front No. 066/n dated November 6, 1943 to Captain Mikhail Leontyevich Bolkhovsky, commander of the 104th engineer battalion of the 5th engineer brigade of the RGK (57th Army , 2nd Ukrainian Front). With units of the 57th Army reaching the Dnieper River, Captain Bolkhovsky’s battalion was entrusted with the task of ensuring the crossing of the river by units of the 64th and 27th Rifle Corps. Captain Bolkhovsky, appointed chief of staff for the organization of the crossing, during September 24-25, 1943, outlined points for the landing and ferry crossing. He concentrated the transfer equipment and on September 26, 1943, began transferring units and their military equipment to the right bank. Despite heavy shelling of the crossing by enemy artillery and mortar fire, Bolkhovsky personally supervised the crossing. He established strict discipline and order among the units prepared for the crossing. He demanded that all-arms commanders completely submit to the established procedures. Fierce enemy fire and continuous air bombing did not prevent Bolkhovsky from carrying out his task in cold blood. The personal presence of the unit commander, his courage and bravery inspired the sappers to better complete the task. As a result of Bolkhovsky’s excellent leadership, the battalion quickly transported more than 16 thousand people, about 100 different guns and mortars, 3,820 boxes of ammunition, 285 horses, 200 anti-tank mines and other military equipment to the right bank of the Dnieper River.

Many units and formations attached the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky II and III degrees to their banners. For example, let's name some of them.

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree was awarded to:

  • 74th separate assault engineer battalion;
  • 395th separate sapper battalion of the Order of Alexander Nevsky (awarded for participation in the liberation of the city of Brno);
  • 919th separate corps engineer Stanislavsky battalion (awarded for participation in the liberation of the city of Uzhgorod).

There are many cases where soldiers and officers nominated for the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky (especially III degree) never received their well-deserved reward. This is what retired Guard Lieutenant Colonel L.K. Kirilusha remembers. (during the war years, staff officer of the 60th Guards Pavlograd Red Banner, Order of Suvorov rifle division):

“Suddenly Major General Monakhov (division commander) looked at me intently.

-Where are your awards? - he asked. One of the staff officers reminded me that documents had been sent to award me the Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky, III degree.

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky is a Soviet military order from the Great Patriotic War.

Story

The Order of Bohdan Khmelnitsky is the fourth and last among all military orders of the USSR.

  • 74th separate assault engineer battalion;
  • 395th separate sapper battalion of the Order of Alexander Nevsky (awarded for participation in the liberation of the city of Brno);

- When will this happen again? - objected the division commander. He called the chief of staff and dictated an order to award me the Order of the Red Star. Soon... the general attached an order (of the Red Star) to my tunic. He congratulated him on the award and said:

— It’s still a long way to Berlin. I hope that “Bogdan” will catch up with you along the way.

Unfortunately this did not happen. The Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky “catches up” with me to this day.”
